O’Brien Harrop Access is a well-established, respected, Western Australian based, independent [disability] Access Consultancy service. We are committed to the provision of professional information and advice regarding the design and construction of built and landscaped environments that meet the requirements of the Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standard 2010 (the Premises Standard), referenced Australian Standards on access and mobility and the intent of the federally legislated Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) (DDA).

• Professional tertiary qualification with an emphasis on how people with a disability, including people with a complex range of needs, interact with and are impacted by the built and landscaped environment.
• A comprehensive understanding and appropriate application of the full raft of relevant legislative and regulatory requirements and the appropriate application of good practice guides prepared by peak-body disability groups.
• O’Brien Harrop Access are cognisant of the complexity of needs of people with differing abilities that may require a different access response depending on the function and purpose of the building or space, including the public realm, train stations, community recreation and leisure facilities, health facilities, state and local government infrastructure, corrective services, entertainment, hospitality outlets and stadia.
• Applying fairness and understanding to the needs of clients and the brief, being at all times mindful of constraints such as site, topography, heritage significance and budget, and ensuring the advice is robust and scaffolded by the national legislative framework.
• Applying skill and knowledge to the application of the legislative and regulatory requirement for equitable and dignified access for people with a disability within the landscaped context and environments may not be considered under the usual certification processes. Further, where existing building constraints and limitations in relation to heritage value render the application of all the rigours of contemporary legislative requirements challenging. O’Brien Harrop Access understands that existing heritage, pedestrian, outdoor, play or entertainment spaces may require specific attention to ensure the needs of people with a disability and the full intent of the Disability Discrimination Act is met.
• O’Brien Harrop Access are skilled in understanding the methods people with specific disabilities employ when navigating and accessing their environment and can advise on design attributes that enhance access and wayfinding for all people, knowing in some instances, the needs of varying user groups may be diametrically opposed.
